Riley Ramoie was born in 1981 to Ron & Janet Ramoie who originally established Molon Excavating & Landscaping in 1978. By the age of 5 Riley was able to operate an excavator with the ability of most seasoned operators; setting boulders for retaining walls, digging for septic systems and demolition work.
Riley spent every summer working for his family business through the age of 16. In these early years Riley learned to operate everything from dozer to asphalt paver and road grader to concrete curb machine. He also learned many project management tools as well, including laser automation and machine control, Auto-Cad & 3D earthwork estimating software. His drive to learn everything he could at young age gained him exposure to every aspect of the excavating and civil construction industry. In 1997 his parents sold Molon to the Walton's, jump starting their next business endever and R Ramoie Contracting was born. Over the next three years Riley learned what it takes to own and operate a business. During this time they focused on residential projects, large landscapes, small private developments and snowplowing in the winters.
In early 2001 Riley moved to Grand Rapids Mi. in an effort to further his education in the industry. Between 2001 and 2005 he work for several large excavating companies. Starting as a pipe layer for Jack Dykstra Excavating, he quickly moved up to the operator position within a few months. Next he held a foreman's position at Oetman Excavating running many large earthwork and underground utility projects. Later he held the lead excavator operators position for Georgetown Construction running a 700EX Hitachi excavator, most notably on one of the many CSO projects for the City of Grand Rapids setting precast concrete pipe as large as 120" and 30" transmission water main for Georgetown Twp. In 2005 he was again looking to further his education in the industry in an estimating and project management position. In late 2005 he was hired into Rieth-Riley Construction Co., Inc. as an estimator and project manager in Traverse City Mi. The next 7 years would prove to be the most influential in his pursuit of knowledge by learning and managing all of the GPS machine control, becoming a certified storm water operator, asphalt estimating & QAQC, project management and all aspects of large business management. He completed many large MDOT, municipal, commercial and private projects including a $14 million, 7 mile reconstruction of I-196 in Allegan Co. This were Riley honed his project management skills by consistently bidding, building and managing $10 to $20 million in projects a year. In 2010 he was in the first graduating class of the "Future Leaders" program with the industries association MITA (Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association), learning everything from liability and risk management to political involvement and its importance to our industry and our communities.
In late 2012 Riley decided it was time to get back to his roots. He moved back to Traverse City Mi. to start his own company; Modal LLC, specializing in civil construction, construction management, excavating & web design and development. The name was conceptualized from the inter-modal stations that are the focus of the industry and also meaning "fabric or textiles", serving as an analogy for the importance of infrastructure within a sustainable community. During this time he also pursued his education in web design and development with his close friend Skyler Nelles of TastiMedia.com.
